On Lyric-Writing
It's interesting how AI will summarize the things that you’ve said. Here I was just dictating my thoughts on how people interpret lyrics, which can intentionally be very random, and generated from cut-up a la William Burroughs. Personally, I like this approach, but it's interesting how one can stumble on something in a book (Superbloom) that relates to how you've been thinking about something, and AI will synthesize those thoughts.
“Lyric writing, according to the sources, is an interesting art form where the meaning might not be immediately obvious. Unlike prose, where clarity of meaning is often the primary goal, in lyric writing, words must be shaped to be singable, not necessarily to mean something specific. This suggests that the sonic and rhythmic qualities of the words are prioritized, and literal meaning can take a secondary role.
The source describes lyric writing as a mechanical process that can sometimes have different interpretations. This implies that the construction of lyrics might involve a focus on sound and rhythm, which can lead to various understandings by different listeners. This variability in interpretation directly relates to the concept of the "responsive chord" that we discussed previously. As the source states, the responsive chord to any one listener will vary. This means that each individual's current emotional state will influence how they perceive and interpret the lyrics they hear.
Our previous discussion established that the meaning of a communication is not inherent in the message itself, but rather in how it "resonates" with the existing knowledge, experiences, and associations already present in the mind of the viewer or receiver. In the context of lyric writing, this means that the meaning a listener derives from a song's lyrics is not solely determined by the words themselves but is also significantly shaped by their personal "responsive chord" – their emotional state at the time of listening – and their unique background and experiences. Therefore, the same lyrics can evoke different emotions and meanings in different people.
.
In essence, the sources suggest that understanding the impact of lyric writing requires acknowledging that its meaning is not fixed or literal but is actively constructed by each listener based on their individual "responsive chord" and the principle of resonance. The emphasis on singability over specific meaning allows for a broader range of emotional connections and interpretations.”
