Words Face the Wall

Image
16.25 x 22.25, acrylic on paper $300 A study for another work in my text-art series, now appropriated as an homage to the sometimes droll conceptual work of the late John Baldessari. I am using the following color classification, loosely based on the sequences of color in the color spectrum: A: Red C: Red D: Orange E: Orange F: Yellow H: Yellow L: Green O: Green R: Blue S: Blue T: Blue W: White In terms of generativity, you could work with the hash value of the string "Words Face The Wall" (DC28A134DEFC289CA6B01B3ACA6D162D). The unique values in the string are: 0 1 2 3 4 6 8 9 A B C D E F ...on which various attributes can be assigned, such as color, material, etc, and it need not be text-based. This is the process I used in my Hash Art series. This is no different from using scales or other rules or rudiments in music, and a good example of borrowing a system from another domain as a metaphorical framework. Initially, the work was inspi...

Acronyms

Image
Acronyms 9x27 inches, acrylic on cardboard, hardware, cold wax, mounted on panel $250 or best offer An acronym is a way to "cut and tile" language into an easy-to-remember shortcut. Acronyms are either empowering, as a semiotic of a utopian ideal (such as AI) or intimidating and somewhat dystopian. As of now, AI is the current "signage" for the future. #2016 #layered #distressed

Through the Dark City, No. 1 (2018)

Image
Through the Dark City, No. 1 (2018) 24x18 inches, acrylic, custom stencil, hardware, on panel. $1000 Another work in the "Hash Art" series, whose letters and numbers are the hash code (A9F49188FA5BF45432EC51732F2C32B2) for William Carlos Williams' 32-word poem "The Great Figure": Among the rain and lights I saw the figure 5 in gold on a red firetruck moving tense unheeded to gong clangs siren howls and wheels rumbling through the dark city. #textart #dada #technology #grids

Green Channel (Study)

Image
Green Channel (Study) (2016) 11" x 14" x 1", acrylic, hardware and stencil on canvas board mounted on panel. (cadmium red over sap green) $100 Assemblage with a slight reference to the Stroop Effect, employing a green "R". The slight variation between a dark green and black is not noticeable in low light, or in the photograph, but is evident only in certain light temperatures. This is a study in two ways: how green interacts with red as a dichotomy, and how physical artworks done with paint, are distinct from back-lit digital art, have a different color space and affect the eye differently. Red is a very hot color in the digital realm (even if a "cool" low-frequency color), and works as well in paint, but very dark greens appear black against reds and oranges, similar to the blackening effect of a red-orange sunset on foreground foliage as the light dims. The same dichotomy exists between a solar panel and solar mirror, one absorbing and the othe...

FXD

Image
FXD 24"x 24"x 2" Mixed Media (acrylic, stencils, hardware, Plexiglas) on wood panel $500 As a part of the Text series, FXD is a truncation of "Fixed". The underlying metaphor is "industry", and like Anachronistic Time Inversion, incorporates video footage of manual skilled labor (welding, carpentry, ironwork). The piece is 'fixed' in the sense that it was continuously in a state of revision or repair, then fixed in final form. All works of art in a sense are in a state of being "fixed" until committed to some final stage. All the "tools" used (such as stencils) were incorporated right into the work. Documentation (Slides, Video): https://sites.google.com/site/fxdartwork/home More about the work: On the meaning of "x": Semiotician Morse Peckham in his mid-60s book Man's Rage For Chaos posits several meanings: "It is, of course, a configurational sign, but its meaning is determined by...

LIK

Image
LIK ('Like') (2012) 24" x 24"x 2" Acrylic on panel $1500 or best offer Documentation Video Short The work was modified in 2024 by the addition of a color-cycling LED in the dot of the eye.  *** February 11, 2019 is Facebook's 15th birthday.  15 influencers weigh in. "LIK" as the urban slang or textionary version of "like", done in orange and Day-Glo for a synesthetic effect, evincing "flavors" and "fragrances" of citrus, strawberry, and blueberry. I wanted to make something that was redolent of orange and vanilla ice cream, like a Dreamsicle. (The study for the piece incorporates a popsicle stick.) The piece uses a graphic design approach, focusing on "layout" and using paint color swatches for the color palette. The work also has its own Facebook page. "...contemporary cognitive science has presented a vast amount of  evidence  that mental states send and receive ripples of cause and effec...
