Ancient AI (2017)

 

Some believe Liner Notes aren't useful, but in anything experimental, explicit creative strategies and objectives can be clarified at the get-go, so there is no confusion later.

This album is all about the sound of confusion! The future (at least to me in music) is in jazz. Jazz will always be joined at the hip with technology because it does what any technology does: extend.

This is a "child" album for its parent "2046". 2046 is also a child of a trilogy of short stories set in 2046, written as "Reset". More here. Very often song ideas will be used cinematically, but later developed further into more expansive pieces, that could also circle back into the 2046 project.

I am experimenting with Coltrane Cycles and harmolodics, as well as other asymmetries inherent in tonal music. The folk wisdom of rock is that there shouldn't be more than three chords used in a piece of music. I have followed this tradition, but with 'artificial' chords--'cluster changes' rather than chord changes.
