Saturnshine

Like all the tunings, the natural harmonics make for interesting chords, in this case "slash" chords. All of them probably need a short name. "Drop 31" would be a good one for this: Strings 3 and 1 are dropped a half-step.

Tuning: E-G#-D-F#. Octaves are fingered as in standard tuning, which makes the tuning seem familiar, but the major third on the top remaps the fingerboard for interesting possibilities. (2/17/2024)

A diagram from the paper diary. At the time I was interested in boundaries and invisible boundaries which can overlay other natural boundaries. You can build towns or cities across rivers and that will eventually create "the wall in the head": "You're from the other side of the river". Developments can be created ad hoc within certain areas where they might not belong as a kind of "occupation". I think that's what I was getting at.

Partch , 29x20 inches, acrylic and pastel on rice paper (2015) Abstract homage to composer and theorist Harry Partch. It has a quasi-oriental quality, perhaps relating to the microtonal nature of some Japanese music.

This obviously wasn't painted on a Sunday (or perhaps it was) but it feels like a Sunday in Paris in June. I am using it here as an image for the diary entry of Count Harry Kessler.  Paris. Diary entry: thoughts about Germans: not industrious, dutiful, only works for money or out of habit. Thinks German talents are half-talents, born salesman, commentator, a daydreamer and beer-drinker. You can hear music anywhere if you just notice it. Like in the Spa Cafe on Monroe Street in the Loop: the freezer makes a canorous humming sound. In the background faintly is the sound of a soda machine, clicking like and insect or bird of some kind. If I were to re-create it, it would be like this. (This was the initial idea for the Music For Places series) [6/2/2024: The cicada broods of 2024 are this year's keynote].

Interesting: When I took this shot several other people took the same one. (Whenever I see someone taking a shot, I never repeat it. But I would imagine there are no less than 10 of these on the internet).  [2022: this is now completely replaced with the (awful) Maggie Daley Park. As much as I admired what the Daleys did for Chicago, this was not a good idea.]

Occupy protest in Scoville Park. When I show up to these events with my SLR slung over my shoulder people always ask me if I'm a reporter. I am in a way—to myself. I want to record history taking place.   Field Audio:

On November 5, 2004, I wrote in my diary: Life is like riding on your very own bus: people get on, people get off, sometimes they get back on every day at the same time and sometimes you never see them again, and the bus never stops, endlessly riding into the sunset. If you take public transportation you tend to see the same people for years--and then you don't for whatever reason. It was also inspired by a scene in a film (which I can't remember) where a scene of a bus stop appeared twice in the film--the first time where the character was waiting at the stop, the bus passes, and the person is still there. The second time the bus passes and the person is no longer there.

Topic for boundary discussion: the boundary between free-form music and structured music. Music without limits can be boring. It's more exciting to make constraints and create resourcefully rather than to play with the net down. Free-form music can also seem arrogant as it doesn't always invite the listener in or compel them to want to connect with it. The success of free music depends on its ability to connect at the "fourth dimension" (level of the conceptual), and the surface elements (how it sounds) are not as important. (Rev. 1/2014: Marina Abramovic talks about it in this video . Using axis formulae, you can control audience response by "swinging the pendulum" from stasis to dynamism.
