Incidents

Image
Incidents 11x14 inches, acrylic on paper Making an artwork using tape makes it an "incident" or injury that is "treated" and eventually "heals" (recovers) into a final state. The tape is the "bandage". 9/2020: For Eddie Van Halen: I was unwittingly inspired by your guitar in a visual way. #2014 #angles #geometric

Candlesticks

Image
These are inspired by the symbol shapes in candlestick financial charts : "The bullish harami shows a downtrend of negative-colored (black) candlesticks engulfing a small positive (white) candlestick, giving a sign of a reversal of the downward trend." They also might suggest cigarettes or syringes if you didn't know the background. I see them as a "cell" as they are used in music, which are short thematic elements that are used as building blocks to generate the work. One of the ideas I had initially was to do them in encaustic and/or crayon as clever self-reference (wax). Perhaps the next in the series ("Three Line Strike"). The titles of the charts were also very cool: Doji Dragonfly Black Marubozu Takuri Line Bullish Harami Three Line Strike View the Series #2020

Augmented Octave

Image
One of my musical metaphor pieces based on the Intervals series--in this case an augmented octave, which is essentially an octave displaced by one semitone, commonly known as a minor ninth or "flat nine". The shape of the octave in the series is a perfect circle. The offsetting or overlap of the circle (as in a Venn diagram) is its "augmentation". How the two circles interact with each other is different for each piece. 8x10 Giclee prints available (as triptych only). Contact me if you would like a set. 1. Augmented Octave No. 1: Color Burn 2. Augmented Octave No. 2: Lighten 3. Augmented Octave No. 3: Luminosity Using the music metaphor to images of the Moon and phase-shifting and intervals ("double-stops"). #2014 #minimalism

Partch

Image
Partch 29x20 inches, acrylic and pastel on rice paper $250 Abstract homage to composer and theorist Harry Partch. It has a quasi-oriental quality, perhaps relating to the microtonal nature of some Japanese music. #2015 #curves #WaterColor

Words Face the Wall

Image
16.25 x 22.25, acrylic on paper $300 A study for another work in my text-art series, now appropriated as an homage to the sometimes droll conceptual work of the late John Baldessari. I am using the following color classification, loosely based on the sequences of color in the color spectrum: A: Red C: Red D: Orange E: Orange F: Yellow H: Yellow L: Green O: Green R: Blue S: Blue T: Blue W: White In terms of generativity, you could work with the hash value of the string "Words Face The Wall" (DC28A134DEFC289CA6B01B3ACA6D162D). The unique values in the string are: 0 1 2 3 4 6 8 9 A B C D E F ...on which various attributes can be assigned, such as color, material, etc, and it need not be text-based. This is the process I used in my Hash Art series. This is no different from using scales or other rules or rudiments in music, and a good example of borrowing a system from another domain as a metaphorical framework. Initially, the work was inspi...

Residues [What Side Are You On?]

Image
Residues [What Side Are You On?] (2016) 22"x30" acrylic and color pencil on paper $450 or best offer As the layers were gradually removed, a topographical metaphor emerged from the grid of faint red lines: As water recedes and rises new patterns appear (like an archipelago) on the surface (not unlike Smithson's "Spiral Jetty"). Ultimately, I have Smithson and Ellsworth Kelly influences here, but it wasn't completely intentional, although I did look at Kelly's simple shapes to research asymmetry as a way to resolve squareness. Smithson was a "residue". #angles
