August 5ths

Film at 3-Penny Cinema: Time Regained. Loved the scene at the recital where the audience seems to be gliding on a platform of some kind, which moved while the camera panned, causing the illusion that background objects moved faster than the camera.

I recall watching an interview with Andre Segovia where he criticized composers for not fully understanding the guitar. Ideally, composers should defer to players’ creative input and revise accordingly.

My personal opinion is that putting musicians in a position to play it strictly as written in fact does stifle creativity. Maybe they prefer to play it that way.

[8/5/2025: If I am scoring something to be a recording only-and not to be performed, I won’t bother putting in any articulations that don’t affect the sound–which goes back to the idea that all music now is all about the sound of it, not for the fine musical details. Using the analogy of woodworking, why bother with dovetailing a join when you could conveniently make it look that way with a veneer? All art may become a veneer if we use AI only.]

On AI music: Why do we need to go to any one place to write or play music? With AI music you always have to be on the internet or on a phone, as opposed to using your instrument(s). Or is this another example of using the internet as an instrument as we used the recording studio? But even then there were instruments in the studio. It wasn’t that we just walked into an empty room that had one computer terminal. Instead of all the instruments that would have been in the studio, sadly all you have is a keyboard and mouse.

Studio PM: Soft ambient video for Eocene (Rifts). Feels spiritual and numinous. It’s interesting how this album came on the heels of the edgy 2046 and Ancient AI albums, which then led up to Rings of Saturn, then the 180 to funky bass music and synthy pop songs. Will I ever revisit Ambient music?
