“Isn’t melody a rhythm?” (It wouldn’t be if it wasn’t). A rhythm can exist on its own, but melody needs rhythm to survive.

[Imagine a series of diatonic random pitches that was generated from AI. There would obviously be a rhythm because music exists in time. But rhythm is in fact a melody because melodies tend to have logic and syntax as opposed to things that are random. Melodies are coherent by nature, but rhythms have to be as well. Drumming can also be melodic, as jazz drumming is].

Wynton Marsalis on Nightline talking about the history and cultural importance of New Orleans, especially its influence on American music. Jazz music was the “sound of democracy” of everyone swinging, drums and bass grooving together. (I think this is an excellent metaphor).

The future of New Orleans can be like the future of Chicago after the fire, and it can revive itself quite quickly, even though the city is abandoned. It is still a place, and will be "re-placed". but it will be the new New Orleans, just as good as the old, or even better, as in Chicago.

[8/31/2025: The trauma that people had experienced ripples through the generations, but it's interesting that trauma doesn’t necessarily affect music over time, such that if you wrote in a more traditional style for a brass band it would all be in minor keys and funereal. That music solved that problem long ago by deciding to be uplifting.]
