August 15ths

The first thing God created was the journey, then he created doubt and nostalgia.

When you generate lots of ideas, they are all stylistically different (as they did in the 1960s with auto design), so a cohesive production vibe is difficult. I have resorted to making short demos (as video shorts), that eventually can converge into an album. Initial choices are too difficult to uphold as a strategy when you’re in the middle of making tactical moves. It might have been easier in back in the 2000s. In 2024 the sentiment is that you should be following your joy and if it isn’t a joyous activity you should just drop it, I’ve never agreed with that. It’s just lazy. It’s interesting I didn’t release any albums from 2000-2005. It’s also interesting that I have not written any jazz since that point, and might be an interesting thing to revisit. But who would be interested in it?

[8/15/2025: Jazz will probably make a comeback because it's something AI will never be able to do because it's so reliant on improv. Generation is not improvisation, it's randomized shuffling. I guess you could say improv is that...]

Watched an interview with Pat Metheny about his new album Moon Dial. He’s always an interesting interview. What I thought was curious was that he said he doesn’t necessarily associate language with music. This is not that surprising because I don’t think he’s ever written music that had words (other than scat) and the collaboration with David Bowie. And yet he’s one of the best talkers around, not to mention having a beautiful mind and disposition. Someone with real power, albeit kind of manic—world tour after world tour and making albums in the middle of them. The latest album also features the baritone guitar (ADGCEA), with the G and C strings tuned up an octave. He was saying that he likes to play on a pairs of strings, which I like as well. (A guitar is 3, 2-stringed instruments. A bass is as well: D-G, A-D, and E-A).
