August 16ths

Film: In the Company of Men—Piper’s Alley. Nasty storms on the way home from movie. It rained for 2-1/2 hours straight. Lost my umbrella and got soaked. (The second coming of Elvis)

I’ve revisited using a capo on bass, mostly with D-G-D-G tuning with capo on 2. (Interesting: There was a photo that was floating around on social media showing Paul McCartney with a capo on the Rick. I can see that he would use it if he wasn’t familiar with certain keys. A bass guitar is a guitar after all, and why not use it? I’ve also found that it changes the sound slightly.

In PM watched Opeth and Dream Theater shows. I can't suss out how they've arrived at these musical results. I see them as drummer songs, where the drummer is the primary songwriter. The rhythms aren't driven by the lyrics as far as I can tell, yet fans can sing-or play along with it. Music is ultimately about imitation, and on how we "look" at music. Dream Theater fans are perceiving music in a different way than I do, or as humans perhaps have ever done over the past 30,000 years. We'll be looking at music quite differently in 2050 or 2100 in ways that we can't conceive of now. And we won't necessarily be imitating it as we did in 2024--if we even are imitating from the past in 2024. Everything is being made by algorithmic processes in a black box we don't fully understand.
