(Diary of Anne Frank)
“The best remedy for those who are frightened, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere they can be alone, alone with the sky, nature and God. For then and only then can you feel that everything is as it should be and that God wants people to be happy amid nature’s beauty and simplicity. As long as this exists, and that should be forever, I know that there will be solace for every sorrow, whatever the circumstances. I firmly believe that nature can bring comfort to all who suffer. Oh, who knows, perhaps it won’t be long before I can share this overwhelming feeling of happiness with someone who feels the same as I do.”
Black-out poetry:
For those who are frightened,
lonely or unhappy,
go outside
alone with the sky, nature and God.
for then and only then–
can you feel nature’s beauty
as long as this exists (and that should be forever)
know that there will be solace for every sorrow,
whatever the circumstances–bring comfort to all who suffer
Oh, who knows
it won’t be long
before I can share
This feeling of happiness
with someone who feels the same
as I do

Once I started learning on my own and investigating classical music and jazz, as well as the avant-garde and minimalists—guys like Steve Reich and John Cage. I had no need for instrument heroes—or heroes of any kind. They were simply influences and different kinds of influences for different genres. For example, Paul McCartney doesn’t influence my writing, but the writing influences the lyric writing with music influenced by McCartney. Sometimes they don’t involve musical skills at all—sometimes it’s the influence of a visual artist. At some point, a Jazz Bass that looks like Jaco’s is just another instrument I might use, and you wouldn’t know it if I used it on a recording, but a hero of Jaco would make a recording where his bass sound was central to everything. I could write a piece about Jaco’s life that might be influenced by no musicians at all, and might even be Carl Jung, especially in regard to his ego inflation. Once you become a writer, or simply involve yourself with writing as the main focus (two different things) the performance part takes a backseat. The ideas are in the driver’s seat.
