My interest in video is to explore the juxtaposition of words and images or sounds and images to formulate results that require the participation and individual interpretation of the viewer. My interest in painting is to explore the infinite variations of form and space relationships to produce objects and images that require the participation and individual interpretation of the viewer.

[2/11/2025: We can probably trace this back to the rise of abstraction in painting in the early 20th century with Kazimir Malevich and other artists who created a paradigm shift away from representational art. The second sentence of Haring’s diary entry could have been made by David Lynch, an artist who fully explored the territory where painting and film overlap].

Possible lyric idea from random phrase (source unknown):

Don’t get me wrong
I appreciate your letter
You know how they fill in the blanks
And delude themselves
And everybody else
To believe their speculations are true

Correspondent report from North Korea–the whole capital city has no lights, but the karaoke bar has lots of disco lights using a US-made generator.

Working completely in the digital realm begs the question of whether we are merely technicians rather than artists. Algorithms can provide the raw material for making artistic choices, but they are not ends in themselves. Ideally they should not be the result of making a copy of a template, making a few tweaks and calling it a day, although it is entirely possible that this could produce an interesting piece of art. This is certainly an issue in music composition, whereby the instrument itself, the gear or the software presets mask the presence of an idea. Even if using plain rudiments, a central idea may not always exist, in either art or science.

Jazz and blues were the “training sets” for rock and roll and that’s still the case, but the rock and roll is different now–the “training sets” are different, and training sets are “literally” used in AI. Last night I watched quite a few videos of Bacharach, as well as all the artists who covered his music, so there’s another level of influence that is incorporated by new technologies and new ways of understanding history.
