(AI-Generated Chicago Diary)

Turner Society building gymnastics equipment—healthy minds in healthy bodies, they say. Strange concept for Americans raised on Puritan suspicion of the flesh.

German beer garden on Lincoln Avenue in evening.

(Harry Kessler Diary)

Thoughts about Germans: not industrious, dutiful, only works for money or out of habit. Thinks German talents are half-talents, born salesman, commentator, a daydreamer and beer-drinker.

A Renoir from 1872, probably something Kessler would have liked (or collected)--or not. It has a summer light.

(Diary of Anne Frank)

Fifth Army has taken Rome. The city neither destroyed nor bombed. Great propaganda for Hitler...Very few potatoes and vegetables. One loaf of bread was moldy....Bad weather. Continuous bombing of Pas de Calais and the west coast of France....No one buying dollars. Gold even less interesting.”

(Eno Diary)

Walking home along the beach (from the station to the temple at Killiney): deep-blue sky, still able to see stones at 11.00."

From Shore To Shore, from the north shore of France to the east coast of Ireland, a song about shores and wars, beaches and beachheads, boundary with the sea.

The Hungarian Gypsy scale for Madame Bijou is appropriate for this particular photograph. Surprised how many people used it for various things, such as jewelry and art. Going to approach it as a film score–essentially a period piece set in Paris in 1932 in Montmartre.
