(Beatles Studio Diary)

Studio Two: Tracks on George’s “I Don’t Know”. “It was for the first time on a Beatle recording, a bass guitar superimposition only, something which would become more commonplace during and after 1967.

The “wide horizons” approach to creativity: One reason you want both science and spirituality in your artwork or your music is that it widens your horizon. You get to access different levels and you can take and leave whatever you want. If you’re not interested in certain aspects of science, don’t use it. If you’re not interested in certain aspects of spirituality, astrology, and so on, don’t use it—or just use a part of it—then just mix it in with the other materials and it’s the best of all worlds. #riff

[Could be called the "metamodernist" approach]

Since the advent of the PC and what was once called “word processing”, we’ve been able to edit indefinitely and non-linearly. I realize that’s how I’m working on music as well. When I start a new piece it might begin with just me playing a guitar or playing a bass part which evolves over time, sometimes over a much longer period, into something inconceivable from the seed ideas.

It’s interesting that Rod Serling never did rewrites. It could have been that spontaneous ideas were immediately incorporated. Kevin Kelly: The secret to making fine things is in remaking them.

What I like about improvised music, as opposed to other art forms, is that it has an open space that you can interact with. You can’t do that with a painting on a wall. That interactive space began with musicians playing along with recordings—although some musicians just copied them verbatim, which was like making a replica of the painting on the wall.

Did a bass workout for 45 minutes. Music performance can have a palliative effect. This is why we need to develop musical skills. If we never learned a rigorous sport then that "drug" is ineffective. It's also good feedback that your playing sucks and incentive to improve (Improvisation as a way to improve).
