Architecture, especially in older cities like Chicago, compress into "geological" layers. One can look down various streets, such as Adams looking west, and see these strata: late 19th century (Marquette Building), Art Deco (135 S. LaSalle, FDR), Postmodernism (190 S. LaSalle, Reagan/Bush), then modernist 80s green-glassed towers with zero personality (Reagan/Bush)—until viewed from 40 years into the future, when it gains "coolness".

9/30/1997             Roy Lichtenstein died. His use of ads, cartoons, etc. is similar to using samples in music. A New Look at the Chicago Panels

The Chicago Panels is a series of minimalist works that Ellsworth Kelly did as a permanent installation at the Art Institute of Chicago for the new Rice Wing in 1988. They are some of the most ignored pieces in the museum, but seeing them in context with the Doric columns and Beaux Arts sculptures is an exciting juxtaposition, which I think makes it decidedly post-modernist. Isomelody and Isorhythm

An interesting exercise is to take an existing melody (as I did with the Bach cello suite) and map it over another rhythm. You can compose your own or use an existing one. With Be Bach I used the sequence of notes in the Suite and mapped it over a bop rhythm that I composed. After the melody was done I added chord changes.
