 Worldwide war protests—China, Tokyo, Australia, Paris, London.

Already suffering from media fatigue. Once that happens the media can manufacture news ad nauseam, and no one would even care. (I think people will want music as a diversion, an anodyne).

"An imposed democracy is a dictatorship".

The answer is art and music (or in bursts of inspiration from unlikely sources at surprising moments).

If you make Baghdad into a Vegas, it will be worse than before.

All the protests are really about cultural hegemony. They are not concerned about people, but rather the culture of the people.

9/30/1997             Roy Lichtenstein died. His use of ads, cartoons, etc. is similar to using samples in music. Music is really mimicking what happens in the art world, but with a long lag time.     9/30/1998             Surfed the Net on collaborative information filtering idea. A New Look at the Chicago Panels

The Chicago Panels is a series of minimalist works that Ellsworth Kelly did as a permanent installation at the Art Institute of Chicago for the new Rice Wing in 1988. They are some of the most ignored pieces in the museum, but seeing them in context with the Doric columns and Beaux Arts sculptures is an exciting juxtaposition, which I think makes it decidedly post-modernist. Isomelody and Isorhythm

An interesting exercise is to take an existing melody (as I did with the Bach cello suite) and map it over another rhythm. You can compose your own or use an existing one. With Be Bach I used the sequence of notes in the Suite and mapped it over a bop rhythm that I composed. After the melody was done I added chord changes.
