“One must take pride in what one is and achieves. I still doubt myself in both myself and my work. In competing with Tom I must unconsciously be competing with my alter ego. In his achievements I see my failures.”

“Instead of waiting for external recognition or applause, learn to applaud your own steps and value what you have created. This shifts focus from checking what rivals are doing (which triggers bad feelings when they get ahead) to productive personal action.” “Discuss social comparison”

Interesting Leonard Cohen quote: "I have a lot of admiration for anyone that just stands up and does it. The content of the material doesn't concern me; it's the fact of the performance—it's the courage and the balls."

[11/21/2024: “Standing up” got redefined on the internet in the ensuing few years after 1997. By 2000, having your own website was the equivalent of “putting yourself out there”. Now it’s expected.]

(Funny) article in paper about an old woman in Mexico that makes art out of chewing gum. That part of Mexico (Talpa de Allende) is now known as the “Cradle of Gum”. (They use it like clay).

Patricia Barber on video talking about her new album recorded live in Paris. Interesting: on lyric writing: The more complex the narrative the less complex the music. (Was she referring to density?) She wrote the lyrics with the constraint of only using only two-syllable words.

[11/21/2025: This relates to the idea of rhythms of language driving the rhythms in the music, which simplifies both the music and the narrative in the sense that it makes it abstract, not unlike abstraction in art].

The announcement by Kanye West that he was doing a Bowie tribute album, produced paroxysms amongst most Bowie fans, and a petition against it has been started.

A generation’s music heroes are very protected by the fans. Alas, it is inevitable that the history of Bowie has already reached the next stage. As the generations pass, the essence of Bowie and his music will change just as much as he did on his own. Memories are like clay that never dries.

One of my early bass influences was James Jamerson and all the players he influenced. To this day, I can feel the roots of it, when I play on deadened strings on a 60s-era jazz bass. It’s still a mystery why I still play the bass. I think it has to do with how the playing of strings feels. People first learning to play complain about the pain of string playing, but it’s luxurious to me.

C#/Db Major is how Spotify interprets the key of spoken word apparently.

Interesting: Picasso claimed not to have read before the age of ten and could not recall the correct order of the alphabet.

Gloomy. First dusting of snow on the leaves that remain.
