Blood River

The 1995 version had a syncopated feel and arose from the metaphor of arteries being like rivers. This version was performed by a really good band in a smoky bar outside of Baton Rouge circa 1978. It's fun to play with AI but I see it as a really low art devoid of any craft. Also, when you attempt to play them there's little musical substance. An analogy would be like using what looks like a real map, only to find that when you get to the the place you think you're going to, it's just an empty field. They're mirages essentially.

A New Look at the Chicago Panels

The Chicago Panels is a series of minimalist works that Ellsworth Kelly did as a permanent installation at the Art Institute of Chicago for the new Rice Wing in 1988. They are some of the most ignored pieces in the museum, but seeing them in context with the Doric columns and Beaux Arts sculptures is an exciting juxtaposition, which I think makes it decidedly post-modernist. Isomelody and Isorhythm

An interesting exercise is to take an existing melody (as I did with the Bach cello suite) and map it over another rhythm. You can compose your own or use an existing one. With Be Bach I used the sequence of notes in the Suite and mapped it over a bop rhythm that I composed. After the melody was done I added chord changes.
