Watched documentaries on PBS about John Glenn and Leonard Bernstein. Interestingly ironic that Glenn quit politics because of his age, but now is going up into space at age 77. I suppose when you have a passion for something you want to have immortality. Bernstein was the same way--he never wanted to let go of music because he loved it so much. I really admire this. Time is tangible in music because you are intimately entrained in it when you are performing it in real-time. But the feeling of time can vary within the musical space depending on how the body and mind are interacting with it. When we talk about “flow” moments we typically refer to a feeling of time moving rapidly, where the body clock is behind the actual clock. It is the opposite when there isn’t a flow. There is also the feeling of the race against the clock, where there can be a positive flow with just the right amount of time or a negative flow where time seems to be running out or has run out. In some spiritual practices, there is the notion of a more fluid sense of time which is not linear and not based on orbits and cycles.

In retrospect, the internet was becoming more idiotic beginning around 2000. People probably started reading fewer books, to the detriment of society in general. I don’t know how anyone can be well-informed by reading everything online, or accessing everything online. Now with the entire internet being scraped and churned by AI, all the bad information gets pressed into spam, and we grow to like Spam.

Whatever we do we have to zoom in and zoom out at the same time or alternately. This happens in music as well where you have to be listening and playing at the same time. It’s particularly difficult to do in composition where you’re listening to what the music is rather than what it should be.
