An interesting device for improvisations (or compositions) is to use a chord in fourths as the primary harmonic element and the major pentatonic scale based on the top note of the voicing, for example using an E Major pentatonic against a chord stacked F#-B-E. Only those notes should be used but you can use other scales such as E Lydian.
