[A day of quotes]
The works are experiments or studies, but of course they are artworks to be viewed in their own right. Experimentation is important, but in the end it is always artistic experimentation; there is no hypothesis or scientific method. The works continue to be experimental even in their “finished” state. I try to maintain this tension, to create works that ask questions rather than give answers.--Olafur Eliasson
When all the doors are closed sometimes you're better off making your own building.--Zoe Keating
There is only one success: to be able to spend your life in your own way.--Christopher Morley
Delegate everything except genius.--Dan Sullivan
One day my father took me aside and left me there." You are a parent to your passion; if you've put it aside and left it there, you should know that it's waiting, wondering what happened to you.--Jackie Vernon
Music is a frame for silence. [Or music is a frame for disorganized sounds. There is a difference between the sequence 9-56-3-40 and 9-56-3-40 in a repeating loop emerging spontaneously out of silence or background noise. The fact that a random sequence is repeated gives it a rhythm and makes it music. If you assigned both pitched and unpitched elements to that sequence also makes it musical, such as a door-slam, a phone notification, a toaster popping up, car horn. It becomes a music seed (frame) that could be filled with more content].

There are two ways that have worked for me for the past 30 years in terms of generating ideas: through improvisation on an instrument to generate them, and through emulation of existing music, or just witty titles or titles grabbed from a book or something. Creativity has an “acoustic” quality by picking up things drifting through the air.

I recall reading a book on acoustic ecology, where one of the field recorders had made the comment that wherever he went in the wild to record, there was some kind of machine running in the background, or the sound of traffic. Modernity has been encroaching on nature since the beginning of the industrial age. (If climate change, in fact, began over 100 years ago, then the 1935 Labor Day Category 5 hurricane in Florida could have been affected by global warming).

To Jazz Fest. Absolutely loved the jazz harpist Brandee Younger. I had never seen a harpist use so much intricate pedal work to create jazz changes and even improvise in and out of them. Had my SLR, so I had my camera eye on.

I feel I should add another level to my 4 Levels theory. What we need now with artificial intelligence used in music is Level 0, where there is no skill involved at all. Like levels 2 and 3, 0 also has access to Level 4 in the sense that it’s conceptual. What I like about AI music is that it shortens the time between applying text, as one would use lyrics in a song, which directly influences what the music becomes. Lyrics are very often the most difficult part of the song, and artificial intelligence solves that problem.
{9/2/2025: With AI, lyrics are everything, as the rhythms of the words are driving the generation of the riffs. If the lyrics have a dumb rhythm you'll get dumb music that makes no rhythmic sense. I've tried translating lyrics to other languages and the rhythms shape the music differently, and in many cases is not usable--at least to my ears. Once you get someone to actually sing it, will you find out what needs tweaking].
