August 19ths

Someone is making a CD that approximates the sounds that tinnitus sufferers hear. (Make something with no aesthetic value, yet has a use in a specific context— “function before form”). How do you approximate what someone else is hearing? It's an “audio POV”, “audio fiction”. The primary aim of the recording is that it helps break down the sense of isolation. It externalizes the internal “ambient music”.

[8/19/2024: Re-invention, re-discovery, re-modernism, going back to nature, going back to the roots. This is the natural reaction to the effect of too much involvement with technology for the sake of itself–even language itself.]

Either art is made manually or can be generative or cybernetic, created by rules. Even if we could make art using a brain-computer interface, and our thoughts and emotions would be digitally plotted then printed, ultimately it’s an art object and exists in the world with all other objects—even Roman or Egyptian art. I don’t think there’s a linear evolution into the future.

A common theme over the past few centuries is that art (or music) gets deracinated (uprooted) from its most natural state by technology. In music, the natural sound of instruments gets separated from the instrument itself, such that a keyboard can sound like anything. But it’s still music, and it will always still be art no matter the technology.

There will always be a human-in-the-loop because they made the technology in the first place. So that’s “absolute zero” in terms of creativity—even if technology lets it evolve on its own. But then that’s just generative art, which is not new.

[8/19/2025: The next logical step in the evolution of AI music is that it can easily generate itself based on some rules and some inputs. But what else is there to do? Entertainment isn’t the answer because it becomes boring finding the experience of being entertained. This is why creativity is so important because it is more capable of being goal-oriented over a longer duration. Writing prompts can be creative, but that’s just the recipe. We don’t have a dinner of recipes].

Abstracted lines from 8/19 diary entries:

Function before form
Start with a basic sound
Think that they were art
Looking at them close and far
Roman or Egyptian art
Brightly-colored African art
Going back to nature
Going back to the roots

A version completely generated by AI, although it created some lyric lines which work well. The video is mine, and not generated.
