Summer solstice. Went to lake at dawn–only a few people there. Who cares about the solstice when you can sleep late? Church, then back up to Lincoln Park, Graceland.

Lunchtime concert by Nigerian group. Summer solstice. Came and went at 2:49 p.m. while I was in a meeting.

The web is about “meaningful miniatures” [Shorts]. A short video clip that’s meaningful is better than a 2-minute clip that takes 5 minutes to download and winds up being not worth the time.

Bought the iPhone. When you get one of these, they become a body organ you can’t live without. It remains to be seen if it informs life or becomes another distraction.

Field recording at Lurie Garden. There are three spatial layers: sound of birds (foreground 1), human voices (foreground 2); mechanical noises (background 1), wind, traffic and other white noise (background 2). There are some birds that sound like mechanical noises which is an interesting juxtaposition.

What I always thought was interesting about AI is that in the process of making something artificial you learn more about being human. From a purely mechanical standpoint, emotions can be quantified, then interpreted by machines, but human-to-human will never be the same as human-to-machine. Why would we want it to?
[6/21/2025: What’s also interesting about AI-generated music is that you can play along with it as we did when we played along with the radio, and in the process get inspired to play and write music. Comparing the two experiences, you realize that playing, even if flawed, is more satisfying. But I can only speak for myself. But vicarious creativity can’t (shouldn’t) compete with real creativity and craft in terms of brain areas that are activated/deactivated].

Studio: Esperanti (Electric Moon), video as well. A delicate stripped-down bass/guitar counterpoint version to the original “Menilmontant” scoring. The title could be a good name for a car.

Solstice 9:57A. Perhaps they’ll find the sub at this moment. Banging noises heard. It’s magical thinking, like seeing “11”. (Thought of Gavin Bryars’ “Sinking of the Titanic”) People must be using it as a metaphor. Didactic...
One never tires of the memory or the feeling of the beginning of summer.
(Time, Cyclic) Celebrate the solstice by bringing awareness to repeating cycles.

A piece of music derived from the rhythm of the phrase, "Cross-written letter from Annie Lister", also using the lyrics from The Letter by the Box Tops as a parallel or "cross-written" lyric. Lister's letter was dated June 21, 1824, 200 years ago. It was 140 years after that there was a "psychedelic" music played on instruments that you would "plug in". Back in the 1820s, "popular" music consisted of (in Anne Lister's world) going to performances of solo flute music, then going to purchase the sheet music to learn how to play it.

Decided to do an orchestral medley of Edge And the Border. I see it as an exercise of “human-in-the-loop”, refusing to obey what AI tells us to do. But we have been told what to do with every popular new technology.
